Passion is big a driver for everybody working at Zeenah Group and all the more rewarding when recognized not only by clients and colleagues, but the whole of Oman.
Romila is one of our senior digital designers and the artist behind the digital portrait of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos that went viral this week – running up to Oman’s 46th National Day.
We took the opportunity to ask him about the portrait, the creative process behind it and his inspiration for this and all other artworks he creates.
PS.: Well done Romila, we’re all proud of you!
How did you come up with the idea of drawing a digital portrait of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos?
I wanted to do something special to show our gratitude for our Sultan in light of his birthday and the 46th National Day. Me and my family are very grateful to be living in such a peaceful country. So, after a very long time of not drawing, I thought of doing a portrait as a tribute to him and my second home country – Oman.
What can you tell us about the creative process, did you use any special digital tools?
It took me around 5 weeks to finish the artwork, with more than 10,00 brush strokes in total. I drew on my iPad Pro, using an Apple pencil as hardware and Procreate 3.1.4/Photoshop as software.
Were you surprised about the success of the portrait?
My dream is actually to meet His Majesty Sultan Qaboos and present the artwork to him. But since that’s not likely I thought I’d share it with my friends and family on Facebook. Before I knew it, the time-lapse video had over 800 views and went viral. Now I have newspapers and radio stations reporting on it. I’m still in shock!
It’s obvious you love drawing and designing. Would you recommend a similar path to others?
I love working as a digital designer. I get to use the passion I’ve had for drawing since I’ve been a small child. For me, it’s one of the best methods to express feelings in silence. I would recommend anybody with the passion to draw or design to just go for it and start expressing your creativity right now. What helped me is that I’ve received plenty of support from my parents and wife up to date. It kind of figures that my personal motto is: “A world without designers is a mess.”
